Joe Average x VMF: 40 Years Later

Curated in collaboration with the McLaren Housing Society, an organisation providing housing to low-income individuals and families who are living with HIV and AIDS, mural artist Joe Average is an internationally renowned Vancouver artist, philanthropist, and AIDS awareness advocate who was recently appointed to the Order of British Columbia.

Joe’s Artist Statement: This image was originally commissioned and designed in 1994 for the 11th international conference on AIDS held in Vancouver in 1996. The image was also used for Canada’s first postage stamp recognising AIDS. What is expressed in this image with the stained glass effect/feeling is that we are all fragile in the face of AIDS but working together with love (the heart in the centre) is what we need to be victorious!

Rewatching some movies with all this free time with the social restrictions and felt like drawing Dani amongst the claustrophobic, hallucinogenic flowers.

4 Hours Speed Mural for The Boxcar, Vancouver

In the summer of 2020, I was invited to paint a speed mural at The Boxcar, Vancouver. Each artist was given a limited time and limited colour scheme to complete their mural with. This was such a creative event with several other artists participating, each with their own unique style. I stuck with an old favourite- Tigers.

Over 6 weeks in April-May 2020, Vancouver Mural Festival teamed up with local artists, Business Associations, Vancity Credit Union, City of Vancouver and Goodbye Graffiti to create temporary murals on storefronts boarded up during the COVID-19 pandemic. The result was 60 incredible murals to inspire hope, brighten streets, celebrate resilience and connect communities.

Pictured is a mural I created for Room In Order who asked for some bright vibrant colours to help bring some cheer to the city.
